Handpicked and personally inspected villas in Italy
June 2013Hi Lori and James, We left Villa Bellina in Spello yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our time there. The villa itself was beautiful and comfortable and spacious, and full of little touches everywhere to make it special and memorable. Andrea, the proprietor, was great, extremely gracious and helpful and attentive when we needed it. The town of Spello was a great home base for exploring Umbria. We were so sad to leave the Villa, and we hope to return sooner than later. Thank you again for everything. Regards,
Daphne H. Delta BC
Located in the village of Spello, a little village in Umbria not far from the famous town of Assisi, is undoubtedly one of the region's most precious gems.
Only a two minute walk from the main piazza. the villa was created by its owner (a trained hotelier who lives nearby) from part of a 14th century church. Nestled against the town walls, Villa Bellina is situated between the ancient gates of Porta del Mastro and Porta Prato. Built of fine, pink-tinted stone, up to one meter thick in places, the villa is cool in summer, with no need for air conditioning, and warm in winter.
MASTER BEDROOM:
Situated at patio level and facing over the garden the large master bedroom with king-size bed feels like a private apartment. Shutters can be closed at night for those who want to sleep late but there is nothing like waking up to a gentle morning breeze. An interesting selection of books and magazines are supplied. With a lovely all-white, marble-lined bathroom as well as a walk-in storage and clothes hanging space, the suite is calm and restful.
ETHNIC BEDROOM:
Set above the master bedroom with the same dazzling country views, this bedroom has been designed in a less traditional style using textiles and the warm colors of Morocco and India teamed with cool, limed oak floors and white walls. From the studio room, a few steps lead up to a landing off of which is the en-suite bathroom and plenty of useful storage. The modern bathroom has a large power shower.
GARDEN BEDROOM:
Accessed directly from the garden, this charming bedroom is a romantic secluded retreat. Furnished with a metal bed from a family home it is decorated simply and comfortably, Designers Guild fabrics in reds and greens providing color along with artworks bought in Marrakesh. Within the room is a fully equipped shower-room. Being able to step out of bed and into the garden is a real treat.
STUDIO:
A large and fascinating mezzanine space reached by a broad stone staircase and lobby off the living room. One wall retains original church figurative painting. With oak floors and vaulted stone walls and ceiling, it was conceived as a place to listen to music or just to relax and read. With a full size sofa bed it can easily be used as a fourth bedroom & there is a bathroom at the foot of the stairs.
LIVING AND DINING ROOM:
Subtle lighting, ancient arches and stone work provide a palpable sense of history to the spacious open-plan living and dining room. Simply decorated with a large cane sofa, a bright Moroccan rug and with a multi-channel television neatly hidden in an old wall cupboard the living area, this is a very comfortable space. The dining table with raw silk covered chairs, seating up to 8 people, is raised just a shallow step above the living area.
KITCHEN:
A real home-away-from-home requires an attractive and well- equipped kitchen. Light and airy the style is reminiscent of Sweden and Provence - this is not a rustic holiday kitchen. Everything from aprons and a wide selection of table linens to fine Riedel wine-glasses and a mighty La Cornue range are supplied.
OUTDOORS:
Covered Patio: Entering the garden from the street door a panorama of great beauty opens to welcome you to your home. Throughout much of the year it is truly relaxing and cool to be outside under the ancient vaulted arches which form the outdoor seating and dining area. A large table and plenty of comfortable chairs are provided. From the patio there is easy access to the kitchen and living room with a gentle flight of steps down to the garden and pool at a lower level.
GARDEN AND SWIMMING POOL:
A low retaining wall across the front of the garden provides unobstructed views of the countryside beyond, especially wonderful at sunset. The pool is set back and to the side of the villa, while lush green lawns, cool underfoot, provide plenty of space for sunbathing or entertaining. Planted with roses, olives and cypress the garden is a quiet contemplative place, an oasis in the truest sense of the word.
